60 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

The Bend Wild tasters have had good beers and bad beers from Dogfish Head.  Unfortunately, most of the bad beers were the ones that we bought from stores here in Bend.  The only good beers we’ve ever tasted from this brewery were either drank on the East Coast or were transported directly from the brewery itself.  We recognize that Dogfish Head has a great national reputation, but we feel like it is not being well represented on the West Coast.  And this is not a knock in anyway against our local beer stores.  Our grocers and local bottle shops take great care of all of their beers once they’re in their position, but for whatever reason, it just seems hard to find a Dogfish Head beer in Bend that still tastes fresh . . . or at least, not as fresh as all of the other beers that are brewed closer to home.

According to the off-centered folks at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, 60-minute IPA is brewed with Warrior, Amarillo, and “Mystery Hop X.”   The bottle is labeled is 6.0% ABV and we’d guess that the IBU’s are also somewhere around 60.

Nose/Appearance:  Damp saw-dust with smokey cardboard undertones.  We suspect this is yet another example of an East Coast beer not ageing well on its journey west.

Flavor/Body:  Neither.  Just kidding, there’s enough cardboard flavor in every sip to fill at least one super-sized recycling bin.  We jest! We know that this beer can be good when it’s fresh, but the truth is, we’re spending money to drink it out here, and it just holds up poorly by the time it makes it this far from Delaware.  If the good folks at Dogfish Head want to send us a fresh bottle or two, we’d gladly reconsider our evaluation.

Finish/Mouthfeel:  It’s just not fair to say anything else.

Overall Drinkability:  We gave it a 7, and that was being generous in its current state.

Celebrity Likeness:   60-Minute IPA has the potential to be Courtney Cox, but right now, it seems more like Courtney Love.  Poorly handled and hard on the palate.
